First-Order Principles for College Teachers
This is a list of principles for good college teachers borrowed from
Robert Boice.
- Moderate classroom incivilities with prosocial immediacies.
- Wait.
- Begin before feeling ready.
- Work and teach in brief, regular sessions.
- Stop.
- Moderate overattachment to content and overreaction to criticism.
- Moderate negative thinking and strong emotions.
- Let others do some of the work.
- Welcome learning and change.
- Build resilience by limiting wasted efforts.
The teaching life should feel like
The blending of excitement with patience so that clarity dominates.
