Departmental Computer Resources
Hardware
Color Postcript Printer - A HP 4600 laser
color printer is accessible from unix. This
printer should
be especially useful for preparing color figures for papers or
transparencies.
The printer is located in SH207. The printer is named mathcolor
and is accessible using standard unix print commands. Printing on this
printer is approximately 5 times more expensive (15 vs. 3 cents per
page)
than printing to one of the black and white printers in the
departments.
While everyone is encouraged to use this as well as our other
resources,
please keep the cost in mind when utilizing them. For more information
on printing to this printer please contact Mike Malone
Color Scanner - A Hewlett Packard color
scanner has been attached to Linda Bullens PC in SH108 (the main Math Department Office). Possible
uses include scanning images for web pages or for inclusion in papers.
Also OCR (optical character recognition) software is available. This
software
uses the scanner to recognize printed material and create text files.

MATLAB Toolboxes and License Upgrades - Matlab
is now available for all networked UNIX systems
(including LINUX),
owned by WPI. These are some of the toolboxes available for use:
- FEMLAB is a powerful tool for
modeling
arbitrary systems of nonlinear
partial differential equations for engineering and sciecintific means.
- SIMULINK is a tool for modeling,
analyzing,
and simulating an extraordinarily
wide variety of physical and mathematical systems, including those with
nonlinear elements and those which make use of continuous and discrete
time.
- The Partial Differential Equation Toolbox
extends
the MATLAB Technical
Computing Environment for the study and solution of PDEs in two space
dimensions
(2-D) and time. More information can be found at http://www.comsol.se/PDE.TB.html
- The Statistics Toolbox provides a
collection of
functions for analyzing,
characterizing, and plotting historical data, estimating probability
models,
and developing statistical algorithms. The interactive GUI tools make
it
easy for non-statisticians to get information about their data quickly
while learning the underlying statistical methods. More information can
be found at http://www.mathworks.com/stats.html

ADINA
- ADINA (Automatic Dynamic Incremental Nonlinear Analysis)
System 7, is a
set of programs for the static and dynamic displacement and stress
analysis
of solids, structures and fluid structure systems. It is designed to
execute
a linear analysis very efficiently and can be followed by a nonlinear
analysis
with relatively few input changes. The package consists of five
independent
programs ADINA, ADINA-T, ADINA-F, ADINA-PLOT and ADINA-IN. ADINA-IN
generates
input data for ADINA, ADINA-T and ADINA-F and ADINA-PLOT produces
graphic
displays of input and/or output of the ADINA, ADINA-T and ADINA-F
programs.
ADINA-T (Automatic Dynamic Incremental Nonlinear Analysis of
Temperatures)
is used for the analysis of linear and nonlinear, steady-state and
transient
heat transfer, and runs independently of the others. Although ADINA can
be used to analyze structure-fluids interactions, ADINA-F is specially
designed for fluid flow analysis. Information or using Adina can be
found here.
MAPLE
- Maple 10 is now out and available for use on the unix
system.
WPI
also now has a license for Maple for pc's. Maple can be
acquired
for the oc by logging into the admin domain. Instructions for installing Maple 10 can be found in this page from the CCC Helpdesk.
OTHER
- For information on other software that WPI supports please
go to their
website here.
Probably
the most important software for someone to install for a pc is an
antivirus
program like Mcafee. Mcafee can be installed on all computers
that
connect to the WPI network. Instructions on installing Mcafee can be found on this page.
