Terminology for Week 5

Terms:

Extreme Value Theorem Calculus pg.166
a continuous function f on a closed bounded interval [a,b] has an absolute maximum and absolute minimum

Conservation of Momentum University Physics pg. 233
if the vector sum of the external forces on a system is zero, the total momentum of the system is constant

Inelastic Collision University Physics pg. 238
a collision in whcih the total kinetic energy after the collision is less that that before

Elastic Collision University Physics pg. 238
a collision where the total kinetic energy od the system is the same after the collision as before

Concavity Calculus pg. 193
the graph of a function f is concave upward on any open interval I where f''(x)>0, and it is concave downward where f''(x)<0.

Inflection Point Calculus pg. 193
suppose the graph of a function f has a tangent line at the point P(c, f(c)) and that the graph is concave up on one side of P and concave down on the toher side. Then P is called that inflection point of the graph
