Changes in Capture Efficiency Due to Folding

Mark Hurwitz, Yueyang Shen, Matt Lucey, Pall, Cortland, NY.

Pall Workshop Documents

Brief Description
Pall makes very fine porous filter media out of PTFE with ratings in the range of nanometers. They are interested in predicting the changes that may occur in the ability of the membrane to capture particles of various sizes where at the folds made when pleating to make a filter cartridge. The term "pore size distribution" refers to the ability of the membrane to capture particles of various sizes and is not well characterized. They suspect that creep may be important in these changes so the problem involves flow of a dilute particle suspension through a nanometer scale porous visco-elastic structure before and after folding.
